SIKKIM & DARJEELING
Small and beautiful, SIKKIM is situated in the Eastern Himalayas, Spread below the Mount Kanchenzonga (8534 mts.), the third highest mountain in the world, it is revered by the Sikkimese as their protective deity. Amidst the gradeur of the mountain peaks, the lush valleys, fast-flowing rivers, terraced hills, Sikkim offers her visitors a rare and singular experience. Within hours one can move from the tropical heat of the lower valleys to the cold of the mountain slopes that reach up to the areas of perpetual show. Gangtok,
the capital of Sikkim, is perched at an altitude of 5800 ft. The town
itself offers a lot to the visitor. You can get hold of ethnic wares from
shops in the local market. There are some Government Emporiums that sell
Sikkimese handlooms and handicrafts. A walk through the town amidst ever
smiling people makes you feel at home. Darjeeling is one of the most magnificent
hill resorts in the world. This heavenly retreat is bathed in hues of
every shade. The rhododendrons, magnolias, miles of undulating hill sides
covered with emerald green tea bushes make for a spectacular sight hard
to find elsewhere. BEST TIME TO VISIT October to May, when one encounters very good climate and visibility
is also very clear. The summer months may have occasional showers with
the onset of monsoon. HOW
TO REACH
The nearest airport is Bagdogra, which is 90 kms from Darjeeling. Bagdogra is connected by Jet Airways and Indian Airlines to Delhi, Calcutta and Guwahati. Once you reach Bagdogra or nearest town Siliguri you can proceed to Darjeeling or Gangtok by road. it takes 4 hours by road to Darjeeling and 5 hours to reach Gangtok. WHAT
TO BRING It
is advisable to travel light. During winter months temparature drops to
single digits. Woolens, wind-cheater, woolen gloves and woolen socks come
in handy, particularly after sunset. It is quite pleasant during the day. All
foreigner intending to visit Sikkim can avail of 15 days' permit. Those
wishing to visit Darjeeling do not require any permit. Permits for FITs
and group for restricted areas in Sikkim, i.e. Gangtok, Rumtek, Phodong,
Pelling can be obtained in advance from all Indian Missions abroad. Sikkim
Tourism offices at Delhi, Calcutta, Siliguri and Gangtok, after furnishing
requisite documents will grant such permits. Jungle Travel will assist
you in this regard. You need to communicate with us well in advance. PERMITS Indian
and foreigner tourists require permits to go to Tsomgo and Yumthang in
Sikkim. The Suprintendent of Police, Check-Post Division of Sikkim, Police
Department , Gangtok, issues permits for domestic tourists. For foreign
tourists, the permit is isssued by the Tourist Department, Govt. of Sikkim,
Gangtok, for a group of not less than 4 members (all forreigners). Jungle
