LEH-TSOMORIRI
|
Early
morning drive from Leh to Tsomoriri. The Rupshu Valley lies
to the south east of Ladakh on the road from Manali to Leh,
at an altitude ranging from 13,200 to 16,500 ft. It is about
240 km Leh app. 08 hrs drive. The valley is inhabited by a small
scattered population of Changpas nomadaic shepherds who also
engage in trade and work the caravans in Ladakh, Lahaul &
Spiti. The area is rich in wildlife including the Kyang (Wild
Ass), red fox and the rare, highly endangered snow leopard,
Black necked cranes and geese flock to the ladke side for breeding
during the summer months.
The
road goes past the ancient Gompas of Shey, Thiksey, via karu
and Upshi, upstream along the true right bank of the Indus river.
The drive to Chumathang is via the village of Likche, Himaya,
Gaik, Kiara and Skidmang. This takes about six hours. Another
22 kms from Chumathamg leads to Mahe bridge. From here drive
along a rough dust track through remote countryside. There are
no villages enroute tents. After about 02 hrs reach a small
beautiful lake called Thazang. Tsomoriri lies another half hours
drive ahead. Overnight at Camp.

TSOMORIRI-KORZOK
|
Moun
lake is situated in the middle of the elevated district of Rupshu.
Its name is characteristic of its situation nestled in the midst
of 20,000 ft, peaks which completely shut the lake in, Legend
has it that a woman riding a yak was carried into the water.
The woman became freightned and scramed RI RI RI RI until the
yak sank and she drowned. Since then the lake has been called
Chomo-ri ri. A km ahead is a picturestic village of korzok consisting
of about a hundred families. Visit the Gompa set on top of the
village. Belonging to the yellow sect. The Gompa is about 350
years old and has about 35 resident monks. Meals and overnight
in the lakeside.

Early
morning drive from Leh to Nubra (07 hrs drive). The Nubra valley
lies in the north of laeh and is accessible over he khardungla
(183800 ft) one of the highest Motorable roads in the world.
The valley was on the trade route from leh to Khagar via saser
and karakoram passes. Apart from unparrelled trekking opportunities.
The valley houses several Buddhist monasteries such as Sumur
(Khagar) and the 350 years old Deskit Gompa, famous for its
murals for Khardung la descend to the village of Khardung and
drive through starkly beautiful country side to the tcp at Khalsar
where permits have to be registered/checked. From here one has
to turn to the left from the Shyok river and drive for 24 kms
over a narrow steep to Deskit where one has to stay in camps.

|
DESKIT
|
After
early breakfast walk up to Deskit monastery to witness the morning
praper ceremony. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the monastery
through a long scattered Chortens. The Gompa is on the highest
point near the village. Belonging to the yellow sect (Gelugpa).
Parts of the Gompa which houses 120 resident monks, are about
700 years old. The Dukhang has many statues, one of which holds
the head and left arm of tukish invader believed to be about
5000 years old. Return to the camps for lunch.
P.M:
Drive 07 kms to visit the Hunder Gompa. This is a small Gompa
belonging to the yellow sect. It is set amidst innumerable Chortens
and has a huge impressive stataue of Chambhja in the main prayer
hall. The Gompa was built at the time when king Namgyal came
here with his wife gyal Khatun.

|
DESKIT-KYAGAR
|
After
breakfast drive down towards Shyok river across an extremely
rough and rocky stretch of flat ground. Cross the river over
a bridge and arrive at the first village of Tirith. The road
from here is extremely bad all the way up to Panamiki. The scenery
however is spectacular, with the snow capped Karrakoram mountains
in the background of weather bing much warmer in comparison
to the Indus Valley. The vegetation is thicker, with a variety
of trees and flowers.
Nubra
is also know for its double humped bactrain camels which is
found in these parts. The camels are left to graze in the Jungle
forest during the summer months and are brought back during
the winter months when they are beast of burden.
Visit
the 150 years old Samsthanling Gompa at Sumur/Khagar. It is
a big complex of 07 temples including the Rinpoches room. Walk
half an hour from the Gompa to Tegar Village where there is
another small Gompa. Walk through the village and explore the
surroundings. Also a small lake lies there.
